Leaving Las Vegas
Las Vegas is a neon metropolis of casinos, headline shows and round-the-clock energy, but it’s also worth wandering off the Strip before you go — the dive bars, mid-century motels and Fremont Street’s underground scene give a different side of the city. Most visitors spend two to four days here before continuing on. Once you’re ready to head out, the first leg of the drive is short: about 44 km (28 mi), roughly 30 minutes, to Boulder City.
Boulder City

Boulder City sits just off the highway between Las Vegas and the Arizona line, and it’s a natural first pause — a small, quiet town in contrast to the Strip, and the closest stop to Hoover Dam. It’s an easy place to stretch your legs before the longer legs ahead.
From Boulder City, it’s about 125 km (78 mi), roughly 1 hour 15 minutes, to Kingman.
Kingman
Kingman is a classic Route 66 crossroads in northwestern Arizona, with a walkable historic downtown and a handful of small museums celebrating the old highway. It’s a reasonable place for a meal or a coffee break roughly halfway between Las Vegas and Williams.
The next leg is about 119 km (74 mi), around 1 hour, to Seligman.
Seligman
Seligman is often called the birthplace of Route 66 tourism, and the town leans into it — old diners, vintage signage, and a main street that still feels like a postcard from the 1950s. It’s a quick stop, but a memorable one if you like roadside Americana.
From Seligman, it’s about 69 km (43 mi), around 35 minutes, to Williams.
Williams
Williams is a historic Route 66 town and the traditional gateway to the Grand Canyon, with enough going on to justify a night or two — most visitors spend one to two days here. It’s small-town, family-friendly and historic all at once, and it’s the last real chance to pack in a variety of activities before the canyon itself.
A few of the top draws in town:
- Bearizona Wildlife Park, a drive-through wildlife park
- Canyon Coaster Adventure Park, for families looking for something active
- Planes of Fame Air Museum, for aviation history
- Poozeum, one of the town’s quirkier stops
- Peter’s Route 66 Gas Station Museum, a nod to the old highway
- Grand Canyon Brewery, a good spot to end the day
Williams also makes a sensible overnight base: it breaks up the drive, and it means arriving at the canyon rim with a full day ahead of you instead of tired from hours behind the wheel.
From Williams, it’s about 84 km (53 mi), around 50 minutes, to Tusayan.

Heads-up
Journey Builder won't schedule a visit or a meal at a place known to be closed.
Good to know
Journey Builder's auto-scheduler usually builds your day-by-day plan in one to three minutes.
Tusayan and the final stretch
Tusayan sits right at the South Entrance of Grand Canyon National Park, making it the last town before the rim itself. From there, it’s a short final hop — about 10 km (6 mi), roughly 10 minutes — into Grand Canyon Village.
Choosing your route
The fastest way between Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon runs through Boulder City, Kingman, Seligman, Williams and Tusayan, covering the full 452 km (281 mi) in about 4 hours 25 minutes. There’s a route with fewer highways, but it runs about 547 km (340 mi) and takes roughly 6 hours 35 minutes — around 48% longer — which makes it a slow alternative rather than a practical one for this trip.
Where Journey Builder fits in
Turning a list of towns into an actual day-by-day plan is the harder part — deciding how long to spend in each place, when to eat, when to check into a hotel, and whether you’ll still make it to the rim before sunset. Journey Builder is built for exactly that. Tell it you want to go from Las Vegas to the Grand Canyon, and it builds the route automatically, with the distance and drive time for every leg, plus alternatives like the fewer-highways option above. It then ranks the towns along the way — Boulder City, Kingman, Seligman, Williams, Tusayan — and shows how far off-route each one is, so you can see at a glance which stops are worth the detour.
From there, it suggests how many nights to spend somewhere like Williams, finds things to do, places to eat and places to stay at each stop, and runs an auto-scheduler that turns your picks into a full itinerary around wake-up and bedtime, drive times, check-ins and meals — usually in one to three minutes. It also won’t schedule a visit to a place known to be closed at that hour, and it’ll flag timing conflicts before they become a problem on the road.
