Everything you need for a road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas: the route, drive times, desert stops, and how to plan it without the guesswork.

A road trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas covers about 436 km (271 mi) on the fastest route and takes roughly 4 hours 5 minutes of driving without stops. That makes it one of the most doable weekend escapes in the American West — close enough for a quick getaway, long enough to feel like a real trip, and lined with just enough desert oddities to make the drive part of the fun. Whether you’re leaving the beaches and studio backlots of Los Angeles for the neon and buffets of Las Vegas, or doing the trip in reverse, here’s how to plan it well.

The fastest route runs about 436 km (271 mi) and takes about 4 hours 5 minutes of driving without stops, following the well-worn path east through the Mojave Desert and into Nevada. Add stops for gas, food, and photos, and most drivers turn this into a 5-to-6-hour day on the road, which is exactly the kind of thing worth planning around rather than winging.

The Classic Route: I-15 Through the Mojave

The drive breaks naturally into four legs, each with its own personality:

  • Los Angeles to Barstow: about 184 km (114 mi), about 1 hour 50 minutes. This stretch climbs out of the LA basin and into the high desert.
  • Barstow to Baker: about 103 km (64 mi), about 55 minutes. The scenery opens up into classic Mojave flatland.
  • Baker to Primm: about 81 km (50 mi), about 45 minutes. This is the loneliest stretch, crossing into Nevada.
  • Primm to Las Vegas: about 69 km (43 mi), about 40 minutes. The final approach, with the Strip’s skyline growing on the horizon.

Together these legs make up the fastest route. A version of the drive that avoids highways runs about 681 km (423 mi) and takes about 10 hours 45 minutes — roughly 161% longer. It’s not a practical alternative for this trip; the interstate is the way almost everyone goes, and for good reason.

Worth a Stop: Barstow, Baker, and Primm

The three towns along the way aren’t destinations in themselves, but they’re natural places to break up the drive. Barstow is the biggest of the three and a common spot for an early lunch or a fuel stop before the emptier stretch ahead. Baker sits deep in the desert and works well as a stretch-your-legs stop, especially in summer when the Mojave heat makes short breaks more frequent. Primm, right on the California-Nevada border, is often where drivers pause one last time before the final push into the city — a good spot to grab a coffee and let everyone in the car wake up for the Strip.

Los Angeles: Where the Trip Begins

Los Angeles is a sprawling metropolis where golden beaches meet mountain trails, world-class museums, and a dining scene spanning every cuisine on earth — a city that rewards travelers who dig past the sun-drenched surface, from Hollywood’s backlots to the street-food stalls of Koreatown. It’s home to roughly 3,863,148 people as of 2026, and its themes run toward foodie, historic and cultural, family-friendly, and outdoor adventure. Most visitors spend anywhere from 3 to 7 days in the area before heading out, which gives plenty of time to work in a few highlights — the Griffith Observatory, Universal Studios Hollywood, the Hollywood Sign, or a walk through Griffith Park — before turning the car toward Nevada.

Las Vegas: Where the Trip Ends

Las Vegas is a relentless neon metropolis where world-class restaurants, headline shows, and round-the-clock casinos collide in the Nevada desert, and beyond the Strip, dive bars, mid-century motels, and the Fremont Street scene reward those who wander off the main drag. Its population sits around 678,922 as of 2024, and it’s known for being a foodie destination, a weekend getaway, family-friendly, and full of hidden gems for those who look. Highlights can include the Fountains of Bellagio, the Mob Museum downtown, and a side trip out to Hoover Dam or Red Rock Canyon for a change of pace from the Strip. Most trips here run 2 to 4 days — enough time to see the Strip, catch a show, and still have a day to explore beyond it.

When to Go

This is a desert drive both ways, so timing matters more than it might seem. Summer afternoons in the Mojave regularly push well past comfortable driving weather, so an early start or a late-afternoon departure can make the crossing much more pleasant, especially through the Barstow-to-Baker stretch where services are sparse. Spring and fall tend to offer milder temperatures for the drive and for exploring either city on foot.

Journey Builder's auto-scheduler builds a day-by-day plan around your wake-up, bedtime, drives, and any fixed plans in about 1 to 3 minutes.

Budget for Gas and the Road

At roughly 436 km (271 mi) one way, this trip is short enough that fuel costs won’t dominate a travel budget, but it’s still worth working out ahead of time, especially if you’re renting a car or driving something less fuel-efficient. If you want a clearer picture before you leave, How to Calculate Gas for Road Trip Costs Before You Hit the Road walks through the math so there are no surprises at the pump.

Choosing the Right Route

For this particular trip, the choice is straightforward: the fastest route via I-15 is the one nearly everyone takes, and the fewer-highways alternative adds more than six extra hours for a trip that’s normally half a day. That’s a trade most travelers won’t want to make. If you’re building out a longer itinerary around this drive — maybe adding stops in the desert or looping through other parts of the Southwest — it helps to think through your route choices early. A Practical Plan for Road Trip Season is a good starting point for that kind of bigger-picture planning.

Planning Tools for This Trip

For a drive this well-traveled, you’ve got options: a basic map app that just draws the fastest line, a stack of guidebooks and forum threads, or a dedicated road trip planner that does more of the legwork. Journey Builder belongs in that last category. It builds the route automatically with distance and drive time for every leg — including alternatives like the fewer-highways option above — so you can see the tradeoffs before committing. It also ranks the towns along the way and suggests stops, showing whether each one sits right on your route or how far off it is, which is genuinely useful on a corridor with only a handful of towns between the two cities. Once you’ve picked your stops, its auto-scheduler turns them into a day-by-day plan built around your wake-up and bedtime, drive times, and any fixed plans like a dinner reservation or a show — usually in 1 to 3 minutes. For a trip this short but this desert-dependent, having sunrise, sunset, and weather forecasts baked into the plan is a small detail that matters.
