Plant City: strawberries and small-town charm

Roughly 25 minutes out of Tampa (about 37 km / 23 mi), Plant City is a natural first break. It’s a small agricultural town best known regionally for its strawberry farms, and it’s an easy, low-key spot to stretch your legs, grab a coffee, or pick up local produce before continuing east.

Lakeland: lakes, swans, and Frank Lloyd Wright

About 15 minutes past Plant City (19 km / 12 mi), you’ll reach Lakeland. With a population of around 108,054, Lakeland is easy to underestimate, but it’s nestled among more than 38 lakes and holds a landmark collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture at Florida Southern College. Its lakeside parks, home to resident swans, make for an easy, peaceful walk after time in the car. Lakeland blends family-friendly appeal with historic and cultural interest and outdoor time, and most visitors find it’s worth anywhere from a quick stop to a couple of days if you want to slow down.

Kissimmee: the gateway to the parks

From Lakeland, it’s about 50 minutes (71 km / 44 mi) to Kissimmee, the town most travelers associate with proximity to Orlando’s theme parks. It’s less a destination in itself on this route and more a natural staging point — a good place to fuel up, grab a meal, or check into a hotel before the final push into Orlando.

Orlando: more than the parks

The last leg, from Kissimmee to Orlando, is about 25 minutes (36 km / 23 mi). Orlando itself, with a 2025 population of roughly 441,600, is widely known as the theme-park capital of the world — home to Walt Disney World, Universal, and SeaWorld — but it also has a genuinely strong dining scene and a network of lakes and trails that many visitors never get to. Families and thrill-seekers can easily spend three to seven days here without running out of things to do. If you’re building out your time in the city, top picks include Universal Studios Florida, Gatorland, the SEA LIFE Orlando Aquarium, and the Crayola Experience.

Choosing your road

It’s a real alternative if you’d rather trade a bit of time for a slower, more scenic drive through the small towns along the way, rather than staying on the interstate the whole time.

Planning the stops without the guesswork

Deciding how long to spend in Lakeland, whether Kissimmee deserves a night, and where to eat along the way is a lot easier with a tool built for exactly this kind of trip. Journey Builder turns a vague idea like “drive from Tampa to Orlando and see some stuff” into a trip you can actually take. It builds the route automatically, with distance and drive time for every leg and alternative roads if you want fewer highways, then ranks the towns along the way and shows whether each is right on your route or how far off it sits and how much of a detour it adds. You can add stops from top picks, a search along the route, a map, or by asking its AI chat — and it will suggest how many nights each stop deserves before turning your picks into a day-by-day plan that respects opening hours, daylight, and drive times. For choosing what to do, eat, and where to stay at each stop, see Choose what you’ll do, where you’ll eat and where you’ll sleep.

Practical notes for the drive

Even a short 1 h 55 min drive benefits from a little planning. If you’re stopping in Lakeland to see the lakes or the Frank Lloyd Wright buildings, check timing so you’re not arriving after closing. If you’re staying overnight anywhere along the way, keeping your bookings, fuel budget, and rental details together in one place makes the trip easier to manage — see Bookings, flights, rentals and costs, all in the trip.
