In short

The fastest route from Charleston to Savannah covers about 246 km (153 mi) and takes roughly 3 hours 5 minutes of driving without stops, following I-95 south through Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island. A route that avoids highways runs 303 km (188 mi) and takes about 4 hours 25 minutes — around 44% longer — so it's really only worth it if you're not in a hurry and want to see more back roads.

Charleston and Savannah sit less than three hours apart along the coastal South Carolina and Georgia line, which makes this one of the easiest weekend road trips in the Southeast. Finding the best route from Charleston to Savannah isn’t complicated, but a few small decisions — which towns to stop in, whether to stick to the interstate, and how much time to set aside — can turn a straightforward drive into a trip worth remembering. Charleston’s cobblestone streets and lowcountry food scene make it tempting to linger, and Savannah’s moss-draped squares are just as hard to rush through, so this guide breaks down the fastest path between them along with the stops worth the time.

The Best Route from Charleston to Savannah

The quickest path between the two cities follows US-17 and I-95 south through the South Carolina lowcountry before crossing into Georgia. It’s a four-leg drive that passes through three small coastal towns, any of which make a reasonable place to stretch your legs, grab lunch, or spend the night if you’d rather split the trip in two instead of doing it in one sitting.

Charleston to Beaufort

The first leg covers 113 km (70 mi) and takes about 1 hour 20 minutes of driving without stops. This is the longest single stretch of the trip, so it’s a natural spot to plan your first break if you’re driving straight through.

Beaufort to Bluffton

From Beaufort, the route continues 48 km (30 mi) to Bluffton, adding about 35 minutes of driving.

Bluffton to Hilton Head Island

A short detour off the main highway brings you to Hilton Head Island, just 24 km (15 mi) and about 20 minutes further along.

Hilton Head Island to Savannah

The final stretch covers 62 km (38 mi) and takes roughly 50 minutes, crossing the Savannah River into Georgia and into the city itself.

Skipping the Highway Isn’t Worth It

If you’d rather avoid highways entirely, there’s an alternative that covers 303 km (188 mi) and takes about 4 hours 25 minutes — roughly 44% longer than the fastest option. That’s over an hour of extra driving for a route that doesn’t offer dramatically different scenery along most of its length, so we wouldn’t treat it as a practical alternative to the main drive. It’s better saved for a day when the destination matters less than the back roads themselves.

Good Stops Along the Way

Because the drive is short, you don’t need to plan a dozen stops to break it up. A couple of well-chosen pauses are enough.

Beaufort

Beaufort’s waterfront and historic downtown make it an easy, walkable place to stop for a meal or a short stroll before getting back on the road.

Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head Island is a worthwhile detour if you want a beach break in the middle of a trip that’s otherwise built around history and food — it only adds about 20 minutes each way off the direct route.

What Awaits You in Charleston and Savannah

With a population of about 157,665, it suits historic and cultural travelers, foodies, weekend getaways, and families alike, and most visitors spend 2 to 4 days exploring it. Popular stops include the South Carolina Aquarium, Boone Hall Plantation, the Charleston City Market, and the Charleston Tea Garden.

Savannah

Savannah’s moss-draped squares, antebellum mansions, and cobblestone streets create one of America’s most atmospheric cities, where history seeps through every shaded boulevard, and the food scene blends Low Country classics with inventive modern dining just steps from the riverfront. With a population of roughly 147,780, Savannah shares Charleston’s appeal for history, food, and a relaxed weekend pace, plus a dose of small-town charm, and it also tends to hold visitors’ attention for 2 to 4 days.

Tip

Break the drive at Beaufort if you want to stretch your legs roughly halfway through the trip.

Planning the Logistics Without the Headache

A three-hour drive sounds simple, but deciding how long to spend in each town, where to eat along the way, and whether to push straight through to Savannah or break the trip overnight in Beaufort still takes some back-and-forth. This is where Journey Builder genuinely helps: it builds the route for you automatically, with the distance and drive time for every leg plus alternative routes, so you can see the highway option and the back-roads option side by side before deciding. It also ranks the towns along your route and suggests stops, showing whether a place like Beaufort or Hilton Head Island sits right on your route or how far off it is and how much of a detour it adds.

Once you’ve picked your stops, Journey Builder’s auto-scheduler turns them into a day-by-day plan built around your wake-up and bedtime, drive times, meals, and any fixed reservations you’ve already made — usually in one to three minutes. For a short trip like Charleston to Savannah, it’s the difference between guessing how much time you’ll actually have in each town and knowing before you leave.
