The drive from Charleston to Savannah covers about 246 km (153 mi) and takes roughly 3 hours 5 minutes of driving without stops. But the things to see between Charleston and Savannah are exactly why most travelers don’t treat this as a straight shot. The Lowcountry coastline between the two cities is stitched together by marsh, tidal creeks and small waterfront towns, and several of them are worth a few hours of your day.

There’s a faster way and a slower, more scenic way to make the drive. A route that avoids highways runs about 303 km (188 mi) and takes about 4 hours 25 minutes — roughly 44% longer than the fastest route. That’s a meaningful amount of extra time for backroads that don’t add much scenery, so most travelers stick to the fastest route and build in stops instead.

Leaving Charleston: what to see before you go

Charleston is a city of about 157,000 people known for cobblestone streets, pastel antebellum mansions, a deep Civil War history, and a food scene that regularly draws attention well beyond South Carolina. It’s the kind of place where a day or two easily turns into four, especially if you’re working history, food, and waterfront time into the same trip.

If you only have a morning before heading south, the Charleston City Market is an easy way to get a feel for the city’s rhythm, with vendors selling local crafts and food under one historic roof. History-focused travelers often build time in for Boone Hall Plantation, while families tend to gravitate toward the South Carolina Aquarium on the waterfront. If you have a bit more time, the Charleston Tea Garden is a quieter, greener stop before you point the car south.

The drive south: Beaufort, Bluffton and Hilton Head Island

Once you leave Charleston, the fastest route breaks naturally into a handful of legs, each a manageable stretch behind the wheel.

The first leg, Charleston to Beaufort, runs about 113 km (70 mi) and takes roughly 1 hour 20 minutes. Beaufort is a small waterfront town with a historic downtown along the water, and it’s an easy place to stretch your legs, walk a few blocks, and get a coffee before continuing on.

From there, Beaufort to Bluffton is a short hop — about 48 km (30 mi), around 35 minutes — putting you in another small, walkable riverside town known for its historic Old Town core.

Bluffton to Hilton Head Island is shorter still, about 24 km (15 mi) and roughly 20 minutes. Hilton Head is the most resort-oriented stop on this route, with beaches, golf, and a slower pace that makes it worth a longer pause if your schedule allows.

The final leg, Hilton Head Island to Savannah, covers about 62 km (38 mi) in around 50 minutes, bringing you into Georgia’s most atmospheric city by the afternoon or evening, depending on how long you lingered along the way.

Any one of these towns can turn a straight drive into a full day trip. Beaufort and Bluffton reward an hour or two of walking; Hilton Head rewards a half-day or more if beaches and golf are part of your plan.

Arriving in Savannah

Savannah is a city of roughly 148,000 people, and it has a reputation to match: moss-draped squares, antebellum mansions, and cobblestone streets that make it one of the most atmospheric cities in the country. History runs through nearly every shaded block, and the food scene — a mix of Low Country classics and inventive modern dining near the riverfront — holds its own against much bigger cities.

Like Charleston, Savannah tends to earn more than a quick pass-through. Most travelers plan two to four days here, splitting time between the historic squares, riverfront restaurants, and a slower pace that fits the city’s small-town charm as much as its big-city food scene.

Where to eat and stay along the way

Both endpoints and most of the stops in between have real options for meals and overnight stays, from waterfront restaurants in the small towns to the wider range of a full city once you reach Charleston or Savannah. If you’re stopping overnight in Beaufort, Bluffton, or Hilton Head Island, booking ahead matters more in peak season, when rooms in these smaller towns fill up faster than in the bigger cities on either end.

Tip

Beaufort, Bluffton, and Hilton Head Island break the Charleston–Savannah drive into short legs, each easy to fold into a single day.

Planning the logistics

Once you’ve decided which of these stops matter to you, the harder part is fitting them into a single day without running out of daylight or arriving somewhere after it’s closed. Journey Builder is one option for this: it builds the route automatically, ranks the towns along the way and tells you whether each is right on your route or how far off it sits, and lets you compare the fastest route against a fewer-highways option. Once you’ve picked your stops, its auto-scheduler turns them into a day-by-day plan that accounts for drive times, opening hours, and your preferred pace, which matters on a drive like this one where a handful of small towns and short legs can add up quickly if you don’t plan the order. You can choose what you’ll do, where you’ll eat and where you’ll sleep at each stop along the way, with filters for things like dietary needs or pet-friendly stays.

If this kind of coastal, small-town drive appeals to you, it’s worth comparing it to other short road trips with a similar rhythm, like the drive between Tampa and Orlando.
